White & Red Blood Count Question?
Ive just picked up my blood test results and now have to wait to see the Doctor so she can have a look at them. In the meantime does anyone know anything about blood? The results that were starred by the clinic are as follows:
White Blood Count 3.440 /mm3 (normal 4500 – 10000)
Neutrofils 1.754 /mm3 (normal 2000 – 75000)
Red Blood Count 3.930 /mm3 (normal 4100000 – 5100000)
R.D.W. SD 47.3 FL (normal 33 – 44.5)
I have had severe headaches/pain in the left temple area and I think they are testing to see if my temporal artery is inflamed or something like that and they were also doing a special test to see how quickly my blood seperated in a test tube to test for this but I dont know what that would be on the results as there are several pages.
Any info before I see the Doctor is much appreciated – not sure yet when I will get to see her….

My Erythrocyte sedimentation rate – ESR is as follows;
1 hour 12 mm/1h
2 hours 25 mm/2h
All the types of cells you list are present in below normal amounts, especially your white cells. This might mean that you are not producing enough cells, that they are dying off more quickly than usual or that your kidneys are not balancing the fluid in your body properly. I’m not sure what the last one says.
They have also tested your ESR, Erythrocyte (red cell) Sedimentation Rate which is a marker for inflammation(that sounds like the one you describe in the test tube). They will probably also have tested CrP or C reactive Protein, another marker of inflammation. If you have inflammation of the temporal artery it can affect your vision which is why they are especially concerned. There is a condition called polymyalgia rheumatica which gives you pain in your muscles, especially round the shoulder, the sort of headaches you describe and raised ESR and CrP, it apparently responds well to a course of steroids in most people.
Have a look at the kidney screen – lots of things like Na, K, albumin, urea (might be BUN or Blood Urea Nitrogen) which tells them if your kidneys are functioning properly.
They probably aren’t going frantic about your condition otherwise you would have been told to get down to the surgery pdq – I was when they thought I had polymyalgia and they weren’t sure about the temporal arteritis because they hadn’t checked it before the blood test. They have just checked it again when the inflammatory factors in my blood went up again.
