As a human being and a writer, downtime is where we become ourselves,looking into the middle distance, kicking the curb, lying on the grass, or sitting on the stoop and staring at the blue waves of summer sky. I dont believe you can write poetry,or compose music,or become a great actor without downtime, and plenty of it. A hitatus, that passes for bordom ,but is really the quite moving of the wheels inside that fuel of creativity, anjd that to me is one of the sadest things about the lives of american children and teens today.
Soccor leagues, acting classes, tutors,hommwork,school activities,chores. the calender of the average middle-class kid is so over the top that soon palm handheld, iphones, ipods, ect.. will be sold in toys ‘r’ us . children are so overscheduled that there is no time for creativity or time for them to be themselves and live life to the fullest. there schedules are as overscheduled as adults and to me thats saying something
Not everybody chooses to do soccer, acting, tutoring, homework, school and chores all at once. For instance, a child might play soccer as a recreational thing as well as attend school, do homework and the chores. However, you don’t go to soccer every single day and you may not always get homework everyday either. Therefore leaving some time for the child to enjoy themselves.
It’s true many children have to juggle a lot of different activities.
With today’s society, many children find it hard to just go outside and enjoy themselves because of all the dangers associated with outdoors. (eg. fear of being kidnapped, fear of getting injured).
Downtime is important as it allows your body to recuperate.
