Think First: Pest Control In The Garden

Take some time right now and think about pest management in your garden. Winter is the best time to think about garden pest management. If you have a bit of wisdom in your pocket you can avoid spraying toxic chemicals which are bad for you, your family, your pets and the wildlife which visit your lovely flower decorated garden.

Being unprepared with your pest management plan can lead to the unhealthy use of quick chemical fixes. Take some time now to think about how you want to handle your pest management this summer so you don’t have to worry about it when you should be relaxing in your garden.

No garden wants to have slugs in it. They leave holes in our hostas making them look like a ragged mess and they also leave slimy trails all over the garden. Yuck. Before you break out the most deadly of slug pellets which will also kill all the snakes, toads and bird feedingcreatures you can try some other things. Turn some pots over in your garden, let the slugs crawl in during the day, pick them out and kill them before they crawl back into your garden at night. You can throw old newspaper bundles around the garden and pick them up in the morning and throw them in the garbage. For a “crawl in but don’t crawl out” trap, partially fill soda cans with a solution of beer, water and yeast. There is a lot of talk about coffee grinds making a good slug deterent. These alternatives are certainly better than scattering poisonous pesticides everywhere.

Japanese beetle, black vine weevil, fleas and cucumber beetles are some more unwelcome guests in your plants. Yellow flowers attract Japanese beetles to your garden…when choosing colors for your garden, keep this in mind. Blame polka dots on your daisies on the striped Cucumber Beetle, and blame jagged rhododendrum leaves on Black Vine Weevil Beetle.

These beetles can be treated with nerve damaging sprays, or you can try the next new wave in pest control and get a head start on saving the planet by investing in some nematodes. Nematodes are threadlike worms that you mix with water and spray or pour around your plant roots. Do not apply your nematodes during the day as sunlight will kill them. Nematodes have grub sensing radar and once they find a pesty grub it’s all over for said grub. They pose no harm to your family but are an effective weapon against grubs.Get those bad beetles with an application of nematodes in the early spring and late fall. Nematodes can be initially expensive but pay for themselves in the second year. Use beneficial nematodes on your lawnscape for the control of grub problems. These are like the whole body cure for your garden and the planet.

Aphids can be a nuisance especially on roses. You can blast them with a strong jet of water once a day for a few days. Spray them with a mix of soap, oil and water. Try predatory lady bugs and praying mantis but they are iffy workers and don’t always show up when you need them the most.

Mosquitos are probably the most unpopular of all garden pests! Citronella is a natural oil that repels mosquitos in the garden. Firepotsfilled withcitronella fuel gelare a key defense against these invasive and unwelcome garden pests!

If you plan ahead you can put these safe pest control applications to work for you in your garden and feel good knowing you are not poisoning the planet’s already overstressed ecosystems. Rest easy knowing you are using safe pest management control and not hurting the planet. You are doing the world a favor when you think before you break out the toxic chemicals which kill everything including the honey bees and the butterflies which actually enhance and decorate your garden.
