My Doberman has some sores/rough skin on his legs?
We adopted a dobermann that had lived in a concrete kennel for the last 3 years, 4 weeks ago. his legs mainly the back have bald spots where he has been lying on the concrete. these areas are very prone to cuts and scrapes. He now lives in our tiled home and has two soft beds for him to lie on. i have been treating them with a pad protector cream is there anything else i can do for him?
You have stated sores and rough skin, but your post sounds more like rough and toughened skin at the elbows on your Doberman. You also didn’t indicate the approximate age of your adopted Dobe.
I’m going to assume he is of average age, and these “sores” are not really open wounds, but rather bald areas with leather-like skin.
Keep in mind a Doberman is not “thick” coated. Their coat is short and that is why they do not do well in cold climates for long periods of time, nor are they meant to be an outside dog. That having been said, your Dobe’s fur has likely been rubbed off from lying on the concrete. His elbows are now calloused. I doubt you will ever get hair to grow back.
You may want to add some Vitamin E and omega oils to his diet. That MIGHT help.
You might also want to be sure there is nothing “thyroid” related going on. That’s an easy blood test. Dobermans are prone to Hypothyroidism, so its worth checking out.
Also, your dog may have Acral Lick Granulomas. These lesions are thought to be due to stress or boredom in some dogs and even to be an obsessive/compulsive disorder in others. They may also be the result of a bacterial skin infection, parasites and other physical causes. Only a vet can be sure.
I suspect the concrete has created the problem, but it would be prudent to talk to a vet.
