How do you locate outlet at beginning of circuit?

We just moved into a house from the ’70s that does not have any GFCI outlets installed. We spoke with an employee at Home Depot about installing GFCI outlets. He mentioned that we only had to install one GFCI outlet per circuit and not replace each outlet. How do I locate which outlet is at the beginning of the circuit for each circuit that I am installing a GFCI outlet on, so that all outlets downstream are covered?

Turn the breaker off. Remove the outlet that is the most likely to be first in the circuit. Cap the wires. Turn the breaker back on and test the other outlets. If you guessed correctly, all the others will be dead. Put the GFCI in place of the outlet that you removed. Hook the incoming wires to the “line” side and the outgoing to the “load” side. If you aren’t sure which is incoming, you will need to test it with a multi-tester to determine which is the “line”.

If you guessed incorrectly, put the original outlet back in and try another and repeat the process. Eventually, through the process of elimination, you will find it. There are no easy quick-fixes here.

PS. If you pull an outlet out of the box and there is only one set of wires going to it, that is the last outlet on the circuit. Put it back in place and start at the other end.

Additional info: JackV may be a GC, but I hope he doesn’t claim to be an electrician. GFCI outlets do NOT shut down due to an overload. That is what the breaker in the breaker box is for. In the event that a GFCI breaker is installed (which is also an option for you, although more expensive) the GFCI breaker serves two purposes. One, to act as a regular breaker in the event of an overload, and two, to trip in the event of a ground fault. GFCI protected circuits are designed to trip with a minute drop in voltage caused by something going to ground….ie, turning on a light in the bathroom with wet hands and grounding yourself as a result. GFCI circuits need to be installed in bathrooms and kitchens, garages, porches, basements, outdoors, and any other area that has the potential for moisture. As you already know, you only have to put one GFCI outlet in a circuit. When I remodel a bathroom, I find the power feed for that circuit and wire everything through the GFCI outlet, including the fan and all the lights. If there is a bathroom heater, I run a second circuit and use a separate GFCI outlet blank or protect the dedicated circuit with a GFCI breaker for the heater only.
