Rio Unveils Olympic Logo

Among all the design controversies of the noughties, there was one that outclassed them all. The launch of the 2012 London Olympic Logo met with a phenomenal backlash, and the reality is that its designers have never truly been forgiven for originating it. This is a custom logo design that only its mother (Sebastian Coe) could love. The most limp wristed defence was the ever dangerous ‘it’s aimed at young people!’, words that invited very unwelcome comparrisons. The half life of any design aimed ‘at da kidz’ is infinitesimal. The harmful toxins from designing a logo that seems to depict a popular cartoon character performing a sex act are contrastingly long lasting.

So the Logo Designer for the following Olympiad, to be held in Rio in 2016, decided to step cautiously with their design. The Rio design was revealed at a New Year’s Eve 2010 party. It shows three stylised stick figures, coloured green, yellow and blue, holding hands. Typical ‘unity’ and positive fluff with the colours of the home nation’s flag. At the base of the logo is found the Olympic logo. It is well complemented by the circular appearance of the Rio logo. In a blue, handwritten style, the words ‘Rio 2016′ appear under the main logo. Whilst the general opinion seems to be that it’s a rather harmless and uninteresting design, there have been positive comparisons with the Matisse painting ‘The Dance’. Still, it cannot be doubted that most Londoners would happily trade it for their unpopular logo.

Design seems to be perpetually knee-deep in controversy, even when boring. The problem that Logo Maker “the Tatil agency” must not now deal with is the quite legitimate looking complaints of plagiarism facing the design. Internet-based critics were quick to notice that the logo has a similar design to the US based ‘Telluride Foundation’. A heart-shaped arrangement of handholding, multicolour human figures, no less. Though the red coloured interloper sets their logo apart, there is an eerie similarity between the two designs. It doesn’t help that the Green, Yellow and Blue are identically arranged in both. The Rio design even looks vaguely like a more anatomically correct heart.
